On this wildlife-focused adventure, spend two life-changing days tracking the endangered mountain gorilla. Then, contrast the dense jungle terrain in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park with the wildlife-rich golden plains of Tanzania. Explore northern Tanzania’s most famous wilderness areas where a huge ancient caldera is home to the highest density of big game in Africa, and where more than 14,000 square kilometres of savannah hosts vast migrating herds on a continuous search for new pastures.
Journey Highlights
Arrive into Kigali, the Rwandan capital, where you are met by a representative of A&K and transferred to your hotel.
The Retreat
This morning explore Kigali with a short City tour and the memorial for victims of the genocide of 1994, a moving experience. Make a short stop for refreshments and a briefing before driving to Wilderness Sabyinyo.

The park protects the Rwandan side of the Virunga volcanoes, a range of six extinct and three live volcanoes which shelter some of the last remaining mountain gorillas in the world. This park gained world notoriety for the work Dian Fossey conducted here.
After an early breakfast, drive to the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters where you are allocated a gorilla tracking group. Following a briefing by your gorilla tracker/guide, the adventure begins. Today’s hike may take anything from one to five hours to reach the gorillas depending on the location of the family. You’ll walk through farmland, bamboo forests and rainforest. Upon sighting the gorillas, stay with them for a magical hour as they go about their daily habits, feeding, foraging, playing, resting and attending the young. Afterwards, return to base where your driver awaits. Lunch is back at the lodge and this afternoon enjoy a scenic drive to view the twin lakes, Ruhondo and Burera, with the spectacular backdrop of the Virunga Volcanoes.

Today is another opportunity to head into the park in search of the mountain gorillas. You will most likely be allocated a different group, the terrain may vary but the experience will certainly be unforgettable.

After breakfast, transfer back to Kigali airport for your flight to the fabled Serengeti, one of the oldest and least-changed ecosystems on earth, where the circle of life plays out every day. It is home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of wildlife. For a portion of each year, dictated by weather patterns and the unpredictable nature of wild animals, vast herds of wildebeests and zebras move through the Serengeti in search of grass and water as part of the year-round Great Migration cycle.
Serengeti Safari Camp | Meals: BLD
Enjoy two days venturing out on morning and afternoon game drives in the protected Serengeti refuge, where flowing rivers support a plethora of species. In addition to the Africa’s iconic species, including lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino, keep your camera handy for sights such as a cheetah bolting after a fleet Thomson’s gazelle. Enjoy ideal game viewing as your highly experienced driver-guide strives continually to keep you in the heart of the action.

Fly to Lake Manyara where you will meet your guide for the drive to your lodge on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, a 610-metre-deep caldera.
Entamanu Ngorongoro | Meals: BLD
Descend into this vast extinct volcano whose towering walls are a natural enclosure for a dazzling abundance of wildlife. See wildebeest, zebra, buffalo and gazelle on the plains, waterbuck, bushbuck and eland in the forest, a healthy elephant population, black rhino, lion, leopard, hippo and flamingo.

Today explore the nearby Tarangire National Park in an open 4x4 vehicle. This park is famous for its large herds of elephants which migrate through the park in search of water between July and October. Breathtaking views of the Maasai Steppe and the mountains to the south make a stop at Tarangire a memorable experience. A full day allows time for plenty of game viewing.
