Hidatei Hanaougi is one of the top ryokans, or traditional inns, in the rural city of Takayama. Its architecture showcases famous native timbers including Japanese zelkova, thought to have a relaxing effect.
There are 48 rooms available, with design balancing the traditional and the new. Pad across tatami flooring and recline on comfy futons (Western-style beds are available). Some rooms feature an open-air bath to sink into, set within an elegant zen garden. For a sample of onsen culture, there are large public bath facilities, a foot bath and several open-air baths (available to book). For dinner, why not indulge in a kaiseki, a multicourse meal, including fresh seafood and quality Hida beef.
Though located in a rural setting, a stay here puts you within a five-minute drive or a 20-minute walk of the city centre. You can hop on a shuttle service from Takayama Station directly to the hotel.
