The long journey to Greystoke Mahale is without question worth it, this tiny sanctuary is very possibly heaven on earth. Home here is one of six wildly exotic open-fronted wooden bandas (cottages), with connected bathrooms and interiors decorated with style and élan. Relax on an upstairs chill-out deck accessed by a cleverly designed canoe shaped ladder, spending lazy hours looking out over the lake across the wide soft sands.
The highlight of any stay at Mahale is chimpanzee trekking (which happens daily) and the privilege of sharing a few moments with these apes. The length of the treks varies depending on where the chimps are, and sightings cannot be guaranteed. An early evening sundowner at the bar or on the dhow is the ideal moment to share your encounters, before a beach dinner under the stars. Children are welcome who are 8 years old and over at Greystoke Mahale. However, Tanapa regulations restrict children under 12 from viewing the chimpanzees.
